Life Interrupted – Inconvenient Truths

// January 26th, 2009 // Life

I heard a great discussion at Sundance last weekend regarding the danger in our society caused by our ability to technologically filter what we hear, what we watch, what we listen to etc. By increasing our options we can actually close our minds and lose our ability to encounter “inconvenient truths”.

The ability to choose in our world today presents a dangerous ability to desensitize and polarize our society by decreasing our exposure to things we disagree with, things we don’t “like”, things that are inconvenient or that maybe we just don’t want to admit are true or real or require action.

The simple example would be to discuss our news sources and the inherent risk of further political polarization in our society due to media bias (both conservative and liberal) and our tendency to seek comfort rather than truth. However, it is too easy to get lost in political discourse rather than focusing on the fact that our collective conscience as a society is at risk.

I think Pastor Craig used a more important example yesterday. He asked us if we were interruptible. He told a story we can all relate to about walking downtown with his head down to avoid the eye contact of the homeless. If you make eye contact, there is a connection. Once there is a connection, there is an acknowledgement of a problem and along with that acknowledgement comes a call to action.

The two reporters I heard speak at Sundance (Nicolas Kristof and Samantha Power) go all over to find the most inconvenient truths in our world today (genocide, sex trafficking). Knowing those things are going on, I’m not sure we can look at our lives the same way but don’t think that those things are only going on in the Congo or Cambodia. There are inconvenient truths all around us. We just need to stop filtering them out.

There are very real problems in our world today. We live in a hurting and broken world. Don’t filter that out. Don’t filter out your call to action. Don’t filter out God’s call on your life. Go where he leads you.

    Very well-thought piece. This would be a great discussion to get a group of people and dissect this premise further and provide feasible solutions to these problems. I agree 100% some people seek comfort and avoid discomfort. It is disappointing b/c we become a weaker society when this happens. Ther must be accountability. Accountability is a key reason why we have become a weaker society.

    Thanks Ryan. I think there are definitely multiple layers to this discussion and I'll probably post on some of the others soon. We can dissect this further and discuss solutions right here in the comments section if yall choose.
