Why I 'I Matter Too'

// March 23rd, 2009 // No Comments » // I Matter Too, Service

logoHey yall,
My new post is up on the I Matter Too blog. I’m going to be doing some writing over there from time to time and when I do I will throw a link up over here. Looking forward to yall joining me over there. Here is a little sample:

It is because of the sense of purpose and meaning that He gives my life that I serve at I Matter Too. I want to share the love that affirms me, that tells me I matter too, with kids who don’t have the benefit of parents or knowledge of a savior that tells them, “Yes, you matter too.”

If you aren’t familiar with I Matter Too, it is a Christian non-profit that provides tutoring and mentoring services to kids in the foster care system. One of the reasons I choose to serve at I Matter Too that I didn’t mention in the post is that I am in awe of the anointing on I Matter Too’s founder, Stacia. When you see God working through an organization and a person like I see him working through I Matter Too and Stacia, you can’ help but want to be a part of it. So head over to the I Matter Too website, read the blog, read Stacia’s testimony, become a mentor, sponsor a child. Get involved! It is a great cause.

Superstar! and More

// March 17th, 2009 // No Comments » // Service

You might only be a TV star for a minute but to those kids you are far more than that. I’m really proud of you Kels.

Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve.

Who's Coming With Me?

// March 11th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Service

Let me start by saying I don’t know exactly what this is. I’m not 100% sure what they are going to be doing. I just know I’m supposed to be there. “God things” are funny that way sometimes.

Couple nights ago I was checking out the Buckhead Church site and stumbled across event you see above. But what really struck me was the quote:

Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve.
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

It intrigued me that I had never heard that quote before. It was tugging at my heart. So I started pulling on the “string” to see where it would lead me. Where it led me was here (some amazing sermons by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) that contain a wealth of knowledge on service and life.

The scripture that this “string” led to and that has been reappearing over the last couple weeks (here for example) is Mark 10. Take the time to read the whole thing but the verse that is sticking with me today and is redefining how I look at our call to service is this:

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)

I know that I feel a call to serve. I know that when I’m serving is when I feel most live. Mark 10 has convinced me that it is not just me. We all have that call on our lives and it doesn’t matter if you are doing it on stage or behind the scenes.

I don’t know where the “string” ends but I’m going to head to Atlanta on April 18th for do.justice to see where it leads next. Who’s coming with me?

Small Things

// March 4th, 2009 // 2 Comments » // Service

Sometimes it seems no matter where you look, what you read or who you talk to, you keep getting hit over the head with the same message. The message lately has been small things. Be faithful in small things. Don’t take pride in how you are called to serve and never view any act as too small, too menial, too unimportant. Most of all don’t view yourself as overqualified.

I grew up around a culture of community service but when I went to college and then started a job, I never quite found a place for service in my life. Part of that was time and part of that was pride. I never found the time to get involved in something I considered “meaningful” and never considered “meaningful” the ways in which I had time to serve.

I realize now that the important thing is to start serving. Start small. Start tiny if that is what it takes but start. Once a week, once a month… just start! When I finally got around to serving, I started going to Faith Cafe on Saturdays to serve food to the homeless. It wasn’t glamorous work and I’m not sure if on an individual level I made any difference at all. I’m pretty sure Faith Cafe had a bigger impact on me than I had on it because God used my willingness to go and serve cheerfully in a small way to reestablish in me a heart for service and to prepare me for the new, bigger doors that he was about to open.

Service snowballed in me. Once I made time for one thing, there was time for another and He kept calling me to bigger and bigger things. I helped organize some of my workers to work on a Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay project. I was blessed with the opportunity to get involved at I Matter Too (a mentoring and tutoring program for children in the foster care system). I was able to play a major part in the music/purity ministry of a close friend. I went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic where I fell in love with the people and  a program called I Love Baseball. More likely than not I’m going back to the Dominican in July to work with I Love Baseball for an extended period of time.

I don’t mean this to sound proud. Don’t take this as a list of my accomplishments. I don’t want praise. I just want to share how God has used me and how he took my tiny willingness to serve, multiplied it by grace and opened big doors.

I’m going to go into more detail on these individual organizations and callings in seperate posts but my point is when you start serving – no matter how small, no matter what level of commitment – it changes you. It breaks down your excuses and hesitancy and allows your desire to serve to grow. It reminds us of something we all know deep down, that life isn’t just about us. How boring would that be if it was? There is something more. We are part of a bigger story.

I don’t mean to imply that you can’t start serving in a small humble way and that is it. That is where you were called. I do know, however, that if you feel called to lead start by serving and through your faithfullness in small things you will be prepared to handle so much more.

His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ (Mark 25:21)

A Call to Serve

// February 19th, 2009 // 6 Comments » // Service

Pete Wilson asked on his blog today “What’s on your heart?”

What is on my heart right now is service.

Some people have a dream. They have a call on their lives that is unmistakable. I lack that vision. I long for that call. What I have discovered over the past two years is that I feel most comfortable , I feel most in tune with God’s will for my life, when I’m serving others, helping them reach their dreams, helping them pursue God’s call on their lives. For whatever reason, I get significantly more excited about things that are important to the people I care about than things that are important to me. I’m much more motivated and excited to help the people close to me pursue their dreams than to pursue my own (if I could ever figure what they might be).

Maybe that is my call. Maybe God designed me to be most alive when I’m helping others pursue His will in their lives. Or maybe this is just a season in which God breaks down my fears and inhibitions and prepares me for a larger call on my life where I’m forced to take center stage.

I often wonder if I prefer to stay backstage because I’m scared to take ownership, to put myself out there to the world and risk failure or if God has really given me a heart to serve and enable others. I know that through my service I’ve been built up. I know I do things now, take risks and put myself out there in ways I didn’t before.

I started serving others and I’m a completely different person now. I’ve found passion. I’m willing to lead. I’m willing to act. None of that was really true before. I was content to operate in fear but with worldy signs of success. Now I have a blog and I’m telling this to all of you… yikes! My how things change.

If you are someone with an unmistakable call on your life (you know you are), stop procrastinating and start living that call. Live it. Breathe it. Don’t let it go until He asks you to. Stop waiting for Him to say yes or go and run with your call until he says stop.

If you don’t feel that unmistakable call, try serving. Maybe that is your call… or maybe it will open up a whole new world to you. This should be an interesting ride.

Romans 11:29 for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.

Chris (chrissulli)
