My First Sermon… In Spanish

// September 26th, 2009 // 7 Comments » // Faith

I gave my first sermon this weekend. It was in Spanish… I’m not sure they understood my Spanish much less that anyone learned anything or was inspired. But something interesting happened. As I walked to the church it occurred to me, “Why am I not nervous?” I wasn’t scared. I hate public speaking. I get nervous. I talk really quickly and am short of breath. But yesterday… nothing. Calm, cool and collected (definitely not the words I would choose to describe myself) and speaking Spanish… or trying to anyway. I get nervous speaking for two minutes in English and I just spoke for 30 minutes in Spanish? Thank you Father. That was a God thing because on my own, I freak out public speaking. I can’t take credit for that one. Hmmm….

Bread Please, Normal… Part 5

// September 15th, 2009 // 4 Comments » // Faith, Life

Pastor Julio was reading Matthew 4 at church one Sunday (where Jesus is led into the desert to be tempted by Satan) and it occurred to me that Satan tempts us in exactly the same way. He asks us to test God. He offers us things that are great in this world. He asks us to worship him and the things he offers.

Jesus was hungry and he offered Jesus exactly what he wanted in that moment, food. He does the same with us. He offers us that thing that seems so important in that moment and usually we cave. But he didn’t even offer good food. It wasn’t a nice steak or some ribs. It wasn’t even a Cuban sandwich or maybe a PB&J. It was just bread. How often do we are we willing to accept “bread” when are tempted? Jesus, turned the bread. Satan offered him all the kingdoms of the world. Most of us don’t even make it to the point of being offered all the kingdoms of the world. We’ll take some bread please. In the end, none of it has value but as long as we are compromising, lets give ourselves some perspective on the situation by taking a long hard look at the things we are willing to settle for. How many of them will last past that moment? How many times do we settle for things we won’t even remember the next hour or day much less the next month or year? And what price do we pay for these things that so quickly lose your value?

Normal… and Afraid Part 4

Guest Post by Andrew Barrows

“All men die; few men ever really live.” That phrase can either be exhilarating or depressing depending on the individual. If when you read that phrase a pit forms in your stomach and you begin to feel uncomfortable you’re thought process is debilitating you. If when you read that phrase a smile comes to your face because you know that not only are you living but you are one of the few in the world that is, embrace that because you are allowing yourself to reach your full potential.

At a person’s core, the people in the first group are the same as the people in the second group. The difference between the two is the second group has developed a skill that the first group has not. We as humans have a built in defense mechanism called fear. From early on we are taught to believe that those with courage and valor have no fear, aka those that really live. Growing up we even had t-shirts with the phrase “no fear” plastered all over it. It’s the bottom of the ninth, two outs, full count bases loaded down by three…….No Fear!!! But that is where we go wrong as a society. We attempt to teach our children and one another that fear is to be overcome by the process of removal when it really is overcome by the process of acceptance.

When we can recognize and accept the fears in our daily lives we can then manage them and therefore overcome them. Every day fears enter our minds. Wake up or you’re going to miss work, don’t swerve into traffic or you will die, don’t talk in the meeting because you might be wrong and get fired, don’t talk to that girl she might reject you, etc. As you can see some fears are good, they force you to avoid dangers in life but as you also can see some fears are bad and will stunt you from reaching your highest potential.

Now some men are wired in a way where they do not allow those negative thoughts to affect their actions. They manage those fears either subconsciously or consciously depending on the person and situation. But for 99% of the population we allow those debilitating fears to negatively affect our actions on a daily basis. So 99% of the people in the world are not living not because they are born cowards but because they are lacking an essential tool for success.

So if you are one of those people that are already really living keep at it you most likely already do this. But if you think you might allow fear to hold you back from time to time, start observing your thoughts when you get uncomfortable. Listen to what you are thinking and telling yourself. Odds are you are giving yourself bad advice and/or filling your head with negative thoughts both of which stop you from living life to the fullest and reaching your full potential.

Don’t be discouraged if you are not a part of the first group, the exciting thing about it is that it doesn’t have to stay that way. This is not a group you have to be born into. All you need is to do is equip yourself with the right tool for success.

Normal… But Not Like Everyone Else

// September 1st, 2009 // 11 Comments » // Faith, Life

1 Samuel 8:19-20
19 But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us, 20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”

I’ll admit it. I read this verse in Samuel and go what are you thinking?!? You want to be like every other nation? You are the chosen people! Act like it! You want less than what God has promised you? You don’t want to be great? You would rather just be like everyone else? You have the one true living God and he isn’t enough for you? He is your king. He is your judge. He goes out before you and fights your battles. But you want an earthly king, a king that is flesh and blood, a king that will fail you?

On paper, Israel’s actions sound ridiculous but stop and reflect for a second, I know I see the same thing all too often in my life.

How often am I willing to accept what the world has to offer rather than holding out for what God has promised me?

If I’m honest with myself, the answer is daily.

I’m normal. But I don’t want to be like everyone else. I’m not better than the next person but I know I’m better off than I was when I judged myself by the world’s standards and not by God’s.  I have something better than what the world values. I don’t deserve it but I don’t want to trade. I do want to share and there is more than enough to go around.

Normal… Part 1

// August 20th, 2009 // 11 Comments » // Faith, Life

I couldn’t be more normal. There is nothing extraordinary about me. I’m just like you. I packed up and moved to the Dominican Republic. So what? I’m not any better or different than you. I’m not doing anything you aren’t capable of doing. I’m not any braver than you are. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians 4:7:

For what makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?

God did a work in me. Through his strength, power, mercy and grace I am here serving. For those who my moving to the Dominican Republic caused reflection on your own life and the value of the pursuits you dedicate your time and talents to, I implore you not to be discouraged or disheartened but to take heart in that what I did I did not do of my own power. To those of you whom a voice asked, “Am I wasting my life?”, don’t mourn the time lost but rejoice that it led you to this point and was not all for not. Give thanks that you now have the time and opportunity to truly live. Pray to your Father in heaven that you may die to your worldly desires and he may give you purpose in Him.

If you are wondering, does that mean I need to drop everything and move to another country, the answer is maybe. You need to evaluate how you use your times and talents and determine whether that is glorifying to God. Not everyone is called to be a missionary or a preacher. God leads each of us into certain places to do works in us and through us. In the Practice of Godliness, Jerry Bridges says, “Service to God through service to mankind is the only motivation acceptable to God for diligence and hard work in our vocational calling.” God may be calling to serve and glorify him as an investment banker. If he is, figure out how you can do that in God’s chosen field for you and pray that he might reveal to you how to serve him in that position. That wasn’t his plan for me in investment banking. He used it to work some things out of me. To convince me to give some things up and that they would never make me happy. He used it to show me I wasn’t going to be happy choosing my own way but needed to be obedient and grateful and go where he sent me.

So to all my normal friends out there, you are in my prayers. I pray God gives you a passion that you can’t live without.
